Andrei Svechnikov netted two goals within 70 seconds in the second period. Sebastian Aho added a goal and two assists to help the Carolina Hurricanes secure a 5-1 victory over the Seattle Kraken on Monday night.
Carolina maintained its unbeaten record, moving to 3-0. This was powered by a strong second period, during which it scored three goals in under three minutes. This included two power-play goals, marking its first success on the power play this season after an 0 for 5 start.
“You need your best players to be the best players if you want to succeed as a group,” said Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour. “So far, those guys have been — three games in — but they certainly have done their job. We need to keep that going.”
Svechnikov’s quick goals came after Andre Burakovsky scored on a power play to narrow the Kraken’s deficit to 2-1. Svechnikov’s first goal, assisted by Aho, came at 13:24 of the second period, followed by a tipped shot from Martin Necas that Svechnikov redirected past Seattle’s goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer.
“It feels good to win a road game on a big road trip, so I greatly liked our game today. I think we all felt pretty good about most of it,” Svechnikov said.
Seth Jarvis scored early in the first period to give Carolina an initial lead. Aho’s power-play goal midway through the second period made it 2-0.
Seattle coach Dave Hakstol remarked, “You’re playing with fire when you put these guys on the power play that often, and you know it came back to get us on their second goal.”
Jordan Martinook scored late in the third period to seal the victory for the Hurricanes.
Carolina goalie Frederik Andersen made 22 saves, including 12 in the third period, thwarting Seattle’s efforts to rally.
Burakovsky’s goal, his second of the season, was his 300th career point and narrowed the gap to 2-1 in the second period. Despite this, Seattle struggled to generate offensive opportunities, managing only 11 shots through the first two periods.
Grubauer made 29 saves, but an early soft goal allowed Jarvis to put Seattle on the back foot from the start. “That puts you in a hole immediately, and you must play from behind. Now we were able to get going and pushed back in, but again that’s not a great way to start a hockey game,” Hakstol said.
HOME DEBUT
Seattle first-round pick Shane Wright made his home debut after being scratched on Saturday against Vegas. The Kraken are managing Wright’s workload cautiously. Wright played on the fourth line with Daniel Spring and Morgan Geekie but was limited to just 6:50 due to the amount of special teams play.
Game Notes
Ondrej Kase missed his second straight game for Carolina due to a concussion. The game was briefly delayed in the third period for glass repair.
