Jessica Campbell has made history again in her coaching career by becoming the first woman to serve as an assistant coach behind an NHL bench with the Seattle Kraken. This groundbreaking appointment follows her previous role as the first female assistant coach in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Coachella Valley Firebirds.
At 32 years old, Campbell brings a wealth of experience and success to the Kraken organization. During her two seasons with the Firebirds, she played a crucial role in leading the team to consecutive Calder Cup Finals appearances. Her expertise in player development and ability to build strong relationships with players were key factors in Kraken’s hiring.
Campbell will work alongside fellow assistant coach Bob Woods, focusing on the power play and forward development. Her responsibilities will be similar to those she held with the Firebirds, where she demonstrated her skills in nurturing talent and improving team performance.
The Kraken’s decision to hire Campbell reflects their commitment to diversity and innovation in hockey operations. General Manager Ron Francis emphasized that Campbell’s hiring was based solely on her coaching abilities and background in skating and skill development. Head Coach Dan Bylsma, who worked with Campbell in Coachella Valley, praised her dedication to player development and her impact on players like Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans.
Campbell’s journey to the NHL bench is a testament to her perseverance and skill. She played boys’ hockey until age 17 before joining Cornell University, where she scored 100 career points. Her transition from player to coach included working with various teams and players across different leagues, culminating in her historic NHL appointment.
While acknowledging the significance of being the first woman in this role, Campbell emphasizes her focus on coaching and player development rather than her gender. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to coach at the NHL level, a dream she never envisioned during her early years in the sport.
The Kraken’s coaching staff now includes Campbell, Woods, and returning staff members Dave Lowry and Steve Briere, with Bylsma at the helm. This diverse and experienced group aims to improve the team’s performance after a disappointing previous season.
Campbell’s appointment is not just a milestone for her but also an inspiration for women and girls aspiring to careers in hockey. As the NHL continues to evolve, Campbell’s presence on the bench represents a significant step forward in breaking barriers and promoting inclusivity in the sport.
