Cole Caufield capped off a memorable night with his second goal of the game, scoring at 3:25 of overtime to give the Montreal Canadiens a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday.

Rookie sensation Ivan Demidov forced overtime when he tied the game late in the third period, while Alex Newhook and Kirby Dach also found the back of the net for Montreal. Goaltender Samuel Montembeault made 18 saves as the Canadiens extended their winning streak to three games in the opener of a four-game homestand.

Caufield continued his hot streak by scoring in his fourth consecutive home opener for Montreal. Newhook’s milestone goal — his first of the season and 300th career NHL point — was assisted by defenseman Alexandre Carrier, who also celebrated his 300th career game.

Jaden Schwartz, Jani Nyman, Jamie Oleksiak, and Jared McCann provided the offense for Seattle. McCann added an assist and extended his scoring streak to three straight games. Goalie Joey Daccord stopped 17 shots in the loss as the Kraken dropped their first game of the season and the opening matchup of their six-game road trip.

The Canadiens’ win served as a measure of revenge after Seattle swept last year’s season series — including an 8-2 rout in Montreal last October.

Pre-game festivities celebrating the home opener included extended ovations for head coach Martin St. Louis, rookie Demidov, and reigning Calder Trophy winner Lane Hutson, who just signed an eight-year, $70.8 million extension on Monday.
