Cole Caufield scored 44 seconds into overtime to lift the Montreal Canadiens past the Seattle Kraken 4-3 on Tuesday night, setting a franchise record with his 11th career overtime goal.
Caufield, who finished with two goals and an assist, now shares the NHL lead with nine goals this season. After circling behind the net, he slipped unnoticed toward the front and tucked the puck past goaltender Joey Daccord, capping a wild finish after Montreal blew a 3-0 third-period lead.
The 24-year-old winger — who tallied a career-high 37 goals and 70 points last season — has already posted four multi-goal games this year. Remarkably, both of his overtime winners this season have come against Seattle; he scored twice, including the decider, in the Canadiens’ 5-4 home opener on Oct. 14.
Juraj Slafkovsky and Alex Newhook added a power-play goal, while Nick Suzuki recorded three assists as the Canadiens wrapped up a four-game road trip with a 3-1 record. Goaltender Jakub Dobes remained unbeaten at 6-0-0, making 18 saves.
The Kraken nearly stole the game late, erasing a three-goal deficit with third-period tallies from Brandon Montour (two goals) and Shane Wright. Montour’s effort was particularly emotional — the veteran defenseman returned to the lineup after missing four games following the death of his brother, Cameron, from ALS complications.
Newhook extended his hot streak with three goals and six points in his last five games, while Montreal dominated special teams, converting both of its power-play chances and winning 30 of 49 faceoffs.
The Canadiens improved to 8-3-0 overall and 5-2 on the road, while Seattle dropped to 5-2-3, losing three straight at home.
