Jared McCann delivered a standout performance with two goals and two assists as the Seattle Kraken rolled to a 5-1 victory over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night.
Jordan Eberle and Matty Beniers each chipped in a goal and an assist, while Ryker Evans also found the back of the net for Seattle. Philipp Grubauer turned aside 19 shots to anchor the win.
Alex Ovechkin scored Washington’s lone goal, his 22nd of the season and the 919th of his storied career, further extending his NHL record. Logan Thompson finished with 27 saves for the Capitals.
Seattle capitalized early in the second period while carrying over a power play from the first. McCann opened the scoring 1:15 into the frame with a strong drive from the right side. He struck again at the 9:51 mark, burying a rebound off a Beniers shot to make it 2-0. The assist extended Beniers’ point streak to four games.
Eberle pushed the lead to 3-0 late in the second, cashing in on another rebound — this time off a McCann blast — for his team-leading 19th goal.
McCann appeared to complete a hat trick early in the third, but the goal was waved off following a video review tied to a confirmed double-minor penalty on Beniers. Washington took advantage of the ensuing power play, with Ovechkin scoring just over a minute into the four-minute man advantage.
Evans restored Seattle’s three-goal cushion with 6:48 remaining, and Beniers capped the scoring at 5-1 with 3:33 left. The goal was Beniers’ ninth of January, tying a franchise record for goals in a single month.
